2010年4月20日にアメリカのルイジアナ州のメキシコ湾沖合で操業していたBPの「ディープウォーター・ホライズン」という石油プラットフォームが爆発し、海底1,522mへ伸びる深さ5500mの掘削パイプが折れて海底油田から大量の原油がメキシコ湾全体へと流出した事故があった。
メキシコ湾に原油流出量が広がり続けるにつれて、経済と環境問題が生じるのは明白である。
原油流出量は1日500キロリットルから4000キロリットルと推定される。収束まで3ヶ月かかると推定されているので、総流出量は4万トンから 30万トンと予想されており、1989年に42万キロリットルが流出したエクソンバルディーズ号原油流出事故を超える恐れがある。
水産業の損害は２５億ドル以上かかると概算されていますが、フロリダ州観光産業の損害は３０億ドルぐらいかかると概算されていることである。
もっと怖いのは、多種多様な動物達の生活は脅かされている。ルイジアナ州の沖合沿いにクジラとイルカとカメを入れて４００種類は危険にさらされている。
そのような事情から、もっと厳しい海洋掘削政策が現実になるだろう。
僕の考えでは、 海洋掘削はたくさんの危険があるので、もっと厳しい政策が必要だと思う。それに、ルイジアナ州の湿原のエコシステムはとてもこわれやすいので、何としてもこのような事故は防がねばならない。
